Description
A day of hiking the beautiful rocky cliffs and shoreline of Monhegan Island, off the coast of Maine in the Atlantic Ocean. The tops of the steep cliffs were filled with cairns - stacks of rocks used as hiking markers. This small, rocky island is ten miles from the mainland and is only accessible by boat. It’s a summer haven for artists and other visitors who appreciate its isolation, hiking and relaxation. Monhegan is a popular hiking location with wilderness areas, cliffs, and crashing surf.
Monhegan Island is a plantation in Lincoln County, Maine, United States, about 12 nautical miles off the mainland. The population was 69 at the 2010 census. The plantation comprises its namesake island and the uninhabited neighboring island of Manana. The island is accessible by scheduled boat service from Boothbay Harbor, New Harbor and Port Clyde. It was designated a National Natural Landmark for its coastal and island flora in 1966.
